Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling and Psychotherapy
If you have a question that isn't answered below, feel free to get in touch. I'm happy to help.
What is counselling and how can it help me?
Counselling is a confidential, professional space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and challenges with the support of a trained therapist. It can help you gain clarity, develop healthier ways of coping, and work through difficult experiences, whether that's anxiety, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, trauma, or simply a sense that something isn't quite right. Many people find that counselling helps them understand themselves more deeply and feel more in control of their thoughts, emotions and decisions.
What kind of counselling and psychotherapy do you offer?
I offer one-to-one counselling and psychotherapy for adults, working integratively, which means I draw from different therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic, cognitive and humanistic therapy, adapting to what feels most useful for you. I am a BACP Accredited counsellor, which means my practice is grounded in the BACP Ethical Framework, ensuring our work together is professional, ethical and client-centred. I offer face-to-face sessions in Hammersmith, Islington, Fulham and Reading, as well as online sessions via Zoom across the UK.
Is counselling completely confidential?
Fundamentally, yes: confidentiality is a crucial part of counselling. Everything we discuss remains strictly confidential, with a small number of legal and ethical exceptions.
-
If there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others.
-
If there are serious concerns about the safety of a child or vulnerable adult.
-
If you disclose involvement in certain severe illegal activities such as terrorism or money laundering.
Outside of these circumstances, nothing you share will be disclosed to anyone without your explicit consent.
How long does each counselling session last?
Each session lasts 50 minutes. This is the standard length for a counselling or psychotherapy session and provides enough time to explore what's on your mind without feeling rushed.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person and depends on what you're working through. Counselling is an open-ended process, we review progress together and decide on the right time to end. Clients are encouraged to attend a minimum of six sessions to build momentum and allow for meaningful progress. Some people work with me for a few months, others for longer. There's no pressure, we go at a pace that feels right for you.
How often should I attend sessions?
Weekly sessions are strongly recommended, particularly at the start of therapy. Regular weekly attendance helps build momentum and allows for deeper, more consistent progress. That said, life happens: holidays, illness and other commitments sometimes get in the way, and that's completely fine. The aim is to meet weekly where possible, and we can review the frequency together as we go.
How much do counselling sessions cost?
Therapy in London can be expensive. Sometimes fees reach the £150 mark. I try to keep my sessions as affordable as possible, while still making sure I am not left out of pocket (especially in this economy!).
My sessions are usually priced between £80 and £90. There is currently a limited offer of £80 per session due to newly available slots (subject to availability). Online sessions are available at a slightly reduced rate: please get in touch for details.
I am registered with Aviva, AXA Health, Vitality and WPA for clients using private health insurance.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes, I do. I am a recognised psychotherapist registered with the following health insurance providers: Aviva, AXA Health, Vitality and WPA. If you have private health insurance and would like to use it to cover your sessions, please check with your provider before getting in touch and I will guide you through the process.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, please give at least 24 hours' notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged the full session fee. This policy exists to protect the time set aside specifically for you.
How do I pay for sessions?
Payment is made via bank transfer, either within 24 hours after the session or in advance if you prefer. I will send you the bank details once we have arranged our first session.
